16 Backyard Camping Ideas for an Outdoor Adventure at Home

When I was a kid, my parents arranged backyard camping as a weekend adventure. We pitched the tent and had fun there, and spent the whole night together.

This is a great experience for beginners and kids to learn about camping without going far into the outdoors and to build skills before a real outdoor adventure.

If you want to take no travel stress or test your camping gear, try the following fun ideas while backyard camping.

1. Set Up a Real Campsite

Okay, clear the land and make it habitable if your backyard has lots of brush and bushes. Learn how to pitch the camping tent on the ground.

Stake the guy line and let the tent raise. Place the sleeping bags, arrange camping chairs, lanterns, a camp table, and an outdoor rug.

Collect all the camping essentials to the campsite at once and lock your house.

As you have to survive on limited resources at the campsite, you cannot enter the house for more.

2. Build a Backyard Campfire (or Safe Fire Alternative)

This is important, and I love this idea. After all, you have to start a fire to warm yourself and cook food.

Arrange a fire pit, or anything from a portable fire pit and smokeless fire pit, to a solo stove and fire bowl.

If fire is not allowed, you can take an LED campfire, a propane fire table, or a fake campfire using lights.

Set some foldable chairs around the campfire to experience a real-like campsite.

3. Cook Every Meal Outdoors

This is a survival skill. You cannot order a meal online without worrying about cooking and washing the dishes.

Don’t cook food in the home kitchen. Make an outdoor kitchen instead and cook there. You can grill the steak or vegetables or simply prepare a one-pot meal.

Try a camp stove breakfast, hot dogs, burgers, or campfire pizza.

Besides, you can make Dutch oven meals, foil packet dinners, pancakes, and simply coffee over the fire.

4. Roast Marshmallows and Make S’mores

This is one of the classic camping activities around the campfire. You can make traditional s’mores with marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers.

Peanut butter s’mores are also good.

You can find chocolate alternatives, use cookies instead of graham crackers, and make fruit-filled s’mores.

It’s sure that your kids will eat all the varieties of s’mores without leaving a piece.

5. Create an Outdoor Movie Theater

This is nothing related to a traditional real camping trip, but it can create memorable memories for the family and bring back the nostalgia.

You’ll need a projector, white sheet or board, outdoor speakers, a blanket, and a big bowl of popcorn.

I recommend you watch some classic movies or anything from Disney.

To align with the camping theme, you can also watch some adventurous or survival movies.

6. Go Stargazing

Lie down under the open sky and enjoy stargazing. Or you can do it while sitting near the campfire.

Download one of the star map apps and take out binoculars to make this experience more fun.

If you have a telescope, that’s great. You can tell the kids about and teach them about the constellations, moon phases, and meteor showers.

7. Play Classic Camping Games

Family camping is about games and fun. So, you can play many games with kids and adults in the summer in your yard.

I have some game ideas.

  • Flashlight tag
  • Stomp Rockets
  • Frisbee
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Cornhole
  • Bean Bag Toss
  • Lawn Darts
  • Ring toss
  • Charades
  • Yardtzee
  • Croquet
  • Card games
  • Horse Shoes
  • Bocce Ball
  • Nature bingo
  • Hacky Sack
  • Flarts

8. Tell Campfire Stories

Camping also has lots of talk and laughter. Jokes, stories, and anecdotes make the campfire more lively.

Also, kids are interested in stories (funny, adventure, mild ghost, gothic, fairy tale, and fantasy).

You can also share family memories among the members. This may strengthen the family relationship.

9. Backyard Birdwatching

I have a backyard garden, where I have placed a couple of bird feeders and birdbaths so birds are common there.

Sparrow, Northern Cardinal, American Robin, and House Finch are some common visitors in my backyard.

Besides, many other birds come for food and water, making it great for birding.

To help your kids, give them binoculars and let them identify the birds.

Besides, you can also watch backyard wildlife such as butterflies, bees, squirrels, rabbits, and insects.

10. Build a Nature Scavenger Hunt

Don’t tell me, you didn’t do it in your childhood.

Make a list of items you assign kids to find. This makes them busy for hours. The items can be the following:

  • Feather
  • Flower
  • Pinecone
  • Leaves
  • Smooth rock
  • Butterfly
  • Bird

You can even get a printable checklist online for the idea.

11. Practice Camping Skills

Before you go camping for the first time, make sure you have learned some skills so you won’t hesitate during the trip.

First, you need to learn how to set up a tent, tie knots, and, if possible, build a fire.

Then, you have to use a compass and read a map to navigate the area. Backpacking helps you get a sense of the essentials you need to carry.

Create a camping checklist.

12. Set up a Hammock

In the summer, tie each side of the hammock ropes or nettles to the trees.

It is quite good to swing under the stars and moonlight. Or you can snuggle up and read your favorite book in the daytime.

This is great for adults and kids.

13. Create a Camp Kitchen Station

Okay, you need to set up the outdoor kitchen after hiking and trekking on the trip. Why don’t you practice this before the real adventure?

Collect the cooking essentials such as ironware, dishes, and pots. Place the small cooler there. And keep the water station slightly above the ground, so water runs off easily.

Keep the trash bags near the kitchen. Don’t throw the kitchen scraps anywhere.

Then, you need to keep an area for dishwashing and place a food prep table. With this, you can have a fancy picnic or at least a simple one.

14. Decorate with Camping Lights

You can put some lights to enhance the atmosphere of your campsite during the evening hours. There are various types of lighting for decorating the tent.

The common ones would be string lights and fairy lights. Besides, the following are also great options.

  • Solar lanterns
  • LED lanterns
  • Mason jar lights
  • Battery candles

15. Wake Up with a Camp Breakfast

Plan a two-day backyard camping trip or start camping early in the morning so you can experience more after the campfire night.

When you wake up in the morning, what chores come?

But first, camp breakfast. Begin with campfire coffee, then prepare the food you like. I have mentioned a few ideas here.

  • Breakfast burritos
  • Eggs
  • Pancakes
  • Bacon
  • Breakfast sandwiches
  • Oatmeal
  • Fruit

16. Make Camping Crafts

If you keep your phones aside, there are lots of things you can do in a single day. For example, you can do some creative things like making some camping crafts with limited resources.

Take out thin, soft grass, like fern fronds, and flowers such as daisies and buttercups to make nature bracelets for kids.

You can also paint the small rocks available in the backyard garden.

Here are a few other crafts to try.

  • Pinecone animals
  • Leaf rubbings
  • Tin Can Lanterns
  • Stick picture frames

Final Thoughts

While backyard camping, you can add season-based essentials to make your outdoor stay more comfortable.

Whether you do it with your partner, family members, kids, or alone, try to be productive and learn as many skills as you can.

That’s all you’ll need while camping at a real campsite.
