My 5 Favorite Camping Meals (You can Also Try)

I barely step down the camping adventures without a chunk of meal, and it’s one of my favorites, like anyone out there calling themselves a foodie.

When your hungry belly is satisfied after hiking or energy-draining fun, I don’t think there is a better feeling for a camper.

I have tried making and eating several camping meals on the trip, but have found the following to be my favorites.

Shepherd’s Breakfast

I love a good breakfast that I can eat at any time of the day.

When you go camping, you get involved in various laborious yet enjoyable adventures, such as hiking, biking, kayaking, and spending the day adventuring, which can drain your energy heavily.

That time, you may crave a meal that makes you full and offers calorie-dense food for the next adventure.

And Shepard’s Breakfast is an excellent option for campers.

To make it, you will need bacon, onion, potato, eggs, and cheese.

Begin by seasoning the pan with oil and add bacon and onion. Cook them until they look brown and crispy. Once done, throw the potatoes.

Don’t worry, potatoes should not necessarily be in a certain way. You have regular potatoes, grated potatoes, and already cooked or fried potatoes.

When you finish working with the potato, top it with eggs.

Add a few cheeses on top and cover the pan with aluminum foil until the eggs and cheese are cooked and melted well.

If you’re cooking fresh or regular potato wedges, try pre-cooking them. I often do it before jumping into the full shepherd’s breakfast meal.

When you cook it with other ingredients, your bacon and onion may get overcooked.

So, you can cook potatoes a little bit before the full-sized meal, and throw them after the bacon and onion are ready.

One Pan Chicken and Vegetables

To make this recipe, you need chicken and vegetables of your choice.

My go-to ingredients for this include chicken breast, zucchini, peppers, mushrooms, and potatoes.

Start by filling or poking chicken so that it cooks a little bit faster. Then, you have to chop all your vegetables and place them around the chicken breast in the pan.

There, add some olive oil to all the ingredients.

Sprinkle salt, pepper, rosemary, thyme, oregano powder, and mix it all so that the chicken and vegetables are nicely covered.

Then, place the pan on the grill grate over the campfire and watch it cook.

You only need to fry the ingredients and toss them with a spatula. Also, ensure that you flip the chicken breast to achieve a golden brown color.

I love this recipe as it is versatile and straightforward to make while camping. You can add as many vegetables as you want.

Campers can swap meat and vegetables and try different seasonings to give a recipe a unique twist.

Caprese Brie

If you’re looking for a snack or a full meal while camping, I would suggest camprese brie.

You can call it a one-pot meal where you throw all the ingredients in a pan and put it over the campfire.

This recipe features a round Brie, accompanied by cherry tomatoes, basil, and a balsamic glaze.  You can start by putting brie in the center of the pan and cherry tomatoes all around it.

I often season with a little bit of olive oil, but it’s up to you!

From there, you need to toss the pan over the campfire and let it cook. Once your brie looks soft and tomatoes are a bit roasted, it’s time to take it off the campfire.

Then, chop some basil and add it to the pan.

Carefully, drizzle nicely cooked ingredients on the balsamic glaze.

And you can enjoy it with crackers or a baguette.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup

I love this soup whenever I have to spend a cold night out there.

You need two pots to cook over the campfire. One pot will be used to heat water, and another pot will be the one in which you will brew the soup.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup

It’s a simple recipe that you can start by boiling water in a pot.

Or begin by chopping the onion and butter in a pot if you have already boiled water.

From there, place it over the campfire and check for onions after a few minutes to see if they are nicely cooked.

Remove it from the pot and place the pot over the fire again, adding butter and a little flour to it. Stir it for a couple of minutes and ensure that the flour doesn’t burn.

Then, add milk, a bouillon cube, and your steaming hot water, and let it come to a nice boil.

In the meantime, you can chop broccoli, which you’re going to add next.

Once the soup is back to a boil, add onions and broccoli again into the pot. Now, you have to wait and let it cook down until your broccoli gets soft and the soup starts to thicken.

After that, you have a few last steps. Put some salt and pepper to taste into the soup and mix it all. Now, you’re going to have a nice and hardy bowl of broccoli cheddar soup.

Korean Style BBQ

Like fellow campers, my trip would be incomplete if I hadn’t eaten BBQ.

Actually, Korean-style BBQ is a result of meeting a nice couple who suggested it to me during my trip to Joshua Tree. I stood up alongside them, watching them prepare everything, and enjoying the taste of the delicious BBQ.

Anyway, you need a pork belly as a main ingredient. If not found, pork chops or other meat of choice also work fine.

Shred the pork belly with scissors to a desired size and start a great going campfire.

Be sure that you know some great campfire cooking tips.

Heat up your grill grate and throw the meat pieces on there. Flip the pieces one after another, ensuring they are nicely cooked.

Look, barbeque isn’t only about meat, but it also needs sides. For this BBQ, you can add some salads or any other vegetables that you’d like.

But they suggested I bring the pre-made Korean Spicy green onion salad. It’s a mixture of green onions with soya sauce, sugar, sesame oil, sesame seeds, chilli flakes, vinegar, and garlic.

That’s where it’s referred to as Korean style.

I also want to add lettuce wraps. Also, don’t forget to add sauce along with some rice.

There you can find two options: fermented soybean paste and sesame dipping sauce.

Final Thoughts

It’s your call to make some really nice camping meals for yourself or your family on the journey, but you have to plan them ahead of time at home.

To save time and resources, you can prepare some ingredients by boiling, chopping, or peeling at home.

Also, don’t cook everything at once if you have a day or a week’s trip ahead.
